The Wayne Hamby Memorial Golf Tournament began in 2010 when Wayne Hamby passed away from multiple myeloma and his Pinecrest Golf Club friends held this event in his memory. The first year there were approximately 82 players. Last year, 2013, the tournament participation grew to over 100; and this year, we are hoping for record attendance.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells which attacks and destroys bone. In the US there are approximately 100,000 patients and nearly 20,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Despite this fact, there is a lack of public awareness about this disease.
Established in 1990, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is the oldest and largest foundation focusing specifically on multiple myeloma. The foundation’s focus is to fund research, provide education, lend support, and promote advocacy initiatives that allow collective voices to be heard. Details of the work being done by the IMF can be found at www.myeloma.org.
